Shadows will be the competition theme when the Wassenberg Camera Club next meets
at 7 pm on Thursday, Sept. 9, at the Art Center on S. Washington St. The long
awaited Club Tee Shirts will also be available at the meeting.
Shooting pictures where you want the shadows to be prominent,
such as on drifting sand or snow, need to be done before 10 am or after 4 pm
when the sun is closer to the horizon. As you start closer to sunrise or sunset,
the more the length of the shadows will increase in the picture.
Shadows can add depth to a scene, lead the eye to the
subject, and produce interesting patterns on a surface. Modern cameras use a
light averaging system to determine the proper exposure. As a result, the light
areas are often overexposed to compensate for the dark areas. You'll need to
meter for the shadow area and lock your exposure setting. Another method would
be to set the aperture on f16 and the shutter to 1/ISO setting. (an ISO setting
of 200 would call for a shutter speed of 1/200)
As you study the scene you are about to shoot, consider what
part the shadows will play as you compose your picture.
