Architecture is the competition
theme in prints and slides when the Camera Club meets on Thursday, March 11,
at 7 pm at the Wassenberg Art Center on S. Washington St. in Van Wert.
- Here are some tips for shooting architectural subjects that were on
the sheet Pres. Watson handed out at the previous meeting.
- Be aware of the direction of light which may increase or decrease
contrast, shadows, textures, and reflections.
- You may need to use a wide-angle lens in order to get the entire
building in the picture, but be aware also of how the lens can bend the
sides of the building inward.
- Sufficient lighting inside the building may present problems, so
bring a tripod and plan for a longer exposure rather than to use a flash
that may remove the atmosphere or details from the scene.
- Night shots can be very dramatic, but take them when there is some
light in the sky to add tone to the backdrop and illuminate details. Again,
lock the camera on a tripod and make a long exposure.
- Although plenty of sun may be good to illuminate your subject,
consider other weather conditions that may produce an entirely different
impression of the scene.
- Look for things such as windows, water or sunglasses that may
reflect the subject to produce a view not often observed by others.
- Finally, architecture is predominately lines, angles, and symmetry.
Look for curves in the form of shadows or reflections that would help to
soften the structure.
The Brumback Library has an impressive photography section that would
supply many more tips for taking good architectural pictures.
