ALVAREZ

Saul Alvarez, 70, of Van Wert, died at 12:55 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010, in Triumph Hospital in Lima.

He was born September 19, 1939, in Durango, Mexico, the son of the late Encarnacion and Hilaria (Carreon) Alvarez. He married Alicia (Gonzalez) Alvarez, who survives in Van Wert.

Other survivors include four children, Bob (Sue) Alvarez of Sherwood, Armando (Diane) Alvarez and Daniel Alvarez, both of Van Wert, and Saul (Lori) Alvarez of Columbia, S.C.; eight brothers, Roberto (Patricia) Alvarez and David Alvarez, both of Sumter, S.C., Guillermo (Adelina) Alvarez, Servando (Marjorie) Alvarez and William (Mary) Alvarez, all of Van Wert, Oscar (Gavy) Alvarez of Fort Wayne, Ind., Joe (Jan) Alvarez of New Haven, Ind., and Raul Alvarez of Taylors, S.C.; four sisters, Maria (Arnold) DeLeon and Elsa (Ramon) Benavidez, both of Van Wert, Irma (Roderick) Hoffman of Daleville, Ind., and Emma (Richard) Huff of Tipp City; a sister-in-law, Toni Alvarez of Van Wert; and nine grandchildren.

A brother, Juan Alvarez, also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 6, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Wert, with the Rev. David Ray officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, at the funeral home.

LONG

Kathryn Joanne Long, 85, of Van Wert, died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010, at the Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.

She was born October 26, 1924, in Van Wert, the daughter of the late William McKinley and Cora Mae (Maxson) Carter. On April 9, 1944, she married Dale Harold Long, who survives in Van Wert.

Other survivors include three children, Diana J. (Chuck) Layman of Spencerville, James M. (Jeannine) Long of Cincinnati and Stephen J. (Donna) Long of Van Wert; a sister-in-law, Dora Carter of Van Wert; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren (3 on the way); ad a great-great-grandchild.

Four brothers, Floyd, Carl Eugene, Raymond and William Carter; and two sisters, Opal Tabler and Mary Evelyn Blosser, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Wert, with Pastor Neal Whitney and James Lyle officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials: Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.
