SCHAFFNER

Cahrol O. Schaffner, 90, of Grover Hill, died at 11:25 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2009, at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana in Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was born September 16, 1919, in Latty Township, Paulding County, the son of the late Walter and Grace (Blythe) Schaffner. He married Wilma Ruth Schaffner, who preceded him in death on December 29, 2007.

Survivors include a son, Cahrol Owen (fiancé Lori Brown) Schaffner of Grover Hill.

A daughter, Rebecca Anne Schaffner; one brother, Doyt Schaffner; and two sisters, Olive Cole and Betty Collins, also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, October 19, at Mt. Pleasant Church in Van Wert County, with Pastor Bill Barnett officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Hoaglin Township, with graveside military rites performed by the Grover Hill Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Sunday, October 18, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert and an hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Preferred memorials: Mt. Pleasant Church or the Grover Hill EMS Squad.

BURLEY

Garnet V. Burley, 91, of Van Wert, died Tuesday, October 13, 2009, at Vancrest Health Care Center in Van Wert.

She was born May 26, 1918, in Dorcas, W.Va., the daughter of the late Hubert C. and Myrtle (Riggleman) Mongold. In 1939, she married Ralph D. Burley, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Reg (Dot) Burley of Van Wert; one brother, William R. Mongold of Petersburg, W.Va.; two grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law.

A brother, John Mongold, and three sisters, Sue Schmuck, Evelyn Shobe and Wilma Rodgers, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 17, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, with Revs. William C. Haggis II and Paul Miller officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.

The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Friday, October 16, and an hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Van Wert, the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.

 

BARNES

Osella Barnes, 91, of Water Valley, Ky., died Tuesday, October 13, 2009, at the Martin Healthcare Center in Martin, Tenn.

She was born March 28, 1918, in Graves County, Ky., the daughter of the late William Franklin and Lottie (McNeil) Boyd. She married Burnie W. Barnes, who preceded her in death on April 4, 1990.

Mrs. Barnes was a homemaker and a member of Bayou De Chien Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 554.

She is survived by three daughters, Judy Brown of Wingo, Ky., Ouida Fields of Convoy and Carol Pounds of South Fulton, Tenn.; four sons, Gayle Barnes, Gerald Barnes, Roger Barnes and Mike Barnes, all of Water Valley, Ky.; a sister, Sue Laird of Houston, Texas; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

A daughter, Rita Jean Barnes; two brothers, and four sisters, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 17, at Hornbeak Funeral Chapel in Fulton, Ky. Burial will follow in Camp Beauregard Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday, October 16, and between 8 a.m. and the times of services Saturday at the funeral home.
