MOENTER
Walter H. Moenter, 90, of Van Wert, died at 10:15 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2009, at The Meadows of Kalida.
He was born January 31, 1919, in Delphos, the
son of the late
Louis and Lovella (Fox) Moenter. On July 1, 1948, he married
Aileen (Pople) Moenter, who preceded him in death on May 20, 1971.
Mr. Mo
enter was employed in sales by the former
E.J. Evans Company in Van Wert and later by Superior Wholesale in Lima, retiring
at age 70. He was a graduate of Delphos St. John’s High School and was a United
States Marine Corps veteran who served in World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and was a member
of the choir for more than 50 years. He was choir director for 10 years and was
also a past president of the church council. He was a life member of Elks Lodge
1197 in Van Wert, where he was a past exalted ruler and also served as a
district deputy. He was also a life member of American Legion Post 178, where he
was chaplain for many years, and also belonged to 40 et 8 Voiture 154 and
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803, both in Van Wert. He was a life member of
Knights of Columbus Van Wert Council 6034 and was an active member of the Van
Wert County Council on Aging.
Survivors include four children, Dr. James (Carol) Moenter of Centerville, Patricia (Michael) Van Autreve of Kettering, Dr. Julie (Doug Racine) Moenter of Bristol, Vt., and Nancy (Ted) Macke of Ottawa; one sister, Luvella Hammill of Lima; a former sister-in-law, Linda Moenter of Centerville; nine grandchildren, Wes (Abby) Van Autreve of Columbus, Dr. Tina Van Autreve of Dayton, Steve (Brenda Batyske) Moenter of Columbus, Alison (Eric) Siefker of Glandorf, Stephanie Moenter of Dayton, Dr. Stacy Moenter of Dayton, Jacob (Anissa) Macke of Columbus Grove, Drew (Laine Gerding) Macke of Perrysburg, and Neil Macke of Ottawa; and four great-grandchildren, Austin Macke, Owen Macke, Noah Macke and Lillian Siefker.
A brother, Paul Moenter, and four sisters, Marguerite Ewell, Mary Hughes, Helen Miller and Wilma Schramm, also preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 2, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert, with Father Mike Zacharias officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert, with graveside military rites performed by the combined honors unit of Legion Post 178 and VFW Post 5803.
The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, October 1, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, where an Elks memorial service will be held at 7:30, followed by a 40 et 8 service and a rosary service.
Preferred memorials: St. Mary’s Parish, Van Wert County Council on Aging or the Elks Cerebral Palsy Fund.
