Information from St. Mary's Catholic School

Safety rules are very important. Mr. Michael and Officer Weigle from the VW Police Department recently visited Kindergarten through 3rd graders at St. Mary of the Assumption School. They represented the “Officer Phi” Safety Program. Magic tricks were used to review the rules about bus, car, winter, 911, helmet use, stranger safety and other rules; good character values were also emphasized. Pictured are some of the students participating in the magic tricks. It was a great program and helped to reinforce these important life saving rules.

“Vocations Awareness Week” was celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption School the last week in February. Students discovered that a vocation is a “calling;” all are called to “holiness.” As adults we are called to be married or single. Father Mike has been called to be single so he can be a priest.
Another person called to be single is Sister Tina. Sister Tina is from the St. John the Evangelist parish in Delphos. She visited St. Mary’s and talked to the students about her life as a sister. Sister Tina explained the difference between nuns and sisters and who lives in a monastery and who lives in a convent. She also told about how she came to be a sister. Sister Tina teaches 3rd grade at St. John’s.

This is the season of Lent in the church. Praying the Stations of the Cross is part of our Lenten preparation. There are 14 stations representing important events in the Passion of Christ. Father Mike is shown here leading the prayers at the Stations of the Cross with grades 2 through 6. The stations are located along the walls of the church; prayer and meditations are offered at each station.

Do you know what the letters stand for in the word “DARE”? Just ask the 5th graders at St. Mary of the Assumption School. The students were taught by Officer Keith Allen about the dangers of using drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. At the conclusion of several weeks of classes they wrote a 200 word essay about what they learned. On Tuesday, February 23, the 5th grade students graduated from the DARE program. Pictured are the 5th graders and their teacher. Also pictured are the 2 winners of the essay contest. They will be rewarded with an airplane ride later this summer.

“Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.”
Caesar came to visit St. Mary of the Assumption School but unfortunately, his end was the same as it was on March 15th all those years ago.
The sixth graders, after studying ancient civilizations in social studies focused on learning about Rome and the contributions from this empire. Students dressed up as Roman citizens and put on a short play about the demise of Caesar. They performed the play for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. It seems Caesar ignored the warning to “Beware the Ides of March” both in the past and in the present.
